The British Army has a permanent training base in Kenya called BATUK. Its main job is to train infantry soldiers who are getting ready for real operations. About 100 permanent staff, 280 temporary soldiers, and over 500 local Kenyan civilians work there. The base also helps nearby communities by building things like water wells and by sending out medical teams to provide basic healthcare.

Vehicle Mechanic

  • Department: Workshop Department
  • Grade: BATUK Grade 8
  • Full/Part Time: FULL TIME 40 Hrs per week.
  • Location: Nyati Barracks Workshop, BATUK MAIN.
  • Reporting To: Heavy/Light Line Foreman/Charge Hand, Heavy/Light Line Production Sergeant

The holder of this position shall carry out the following duties:

  • Fix machines by only using the official Army manuals.
  • Follow all the rules in those manuals.
  • Keep your tools clean and ready. Make sure all tools are clean, work properly, and are all there.
  • Follow unit and system rules. Do your job the way your unit and the Engineering Management System say to.
  • Follow all workshop, chemical, and safety rules.
  • Only use special tools and wear your safety equipment.
  • Test what you fix. Drive or use the equipment after you repair it to check your work.
  • Report any problems in your section to your foreman or sergeant.
  • Let your higher-ups know about any workshop issues as soon as possible.
  • You would be required to travel to the exercise area to fix BATUK’s white fleet vehicles and service the green fleet for real-life needs.
  • You are expected to keep an eye on equipment and materials at work and report any misuse or bad practices to your superiors.
  • You’ll also do other assigned jobs while performing other tasks that match your skill level when asked by the LEC supervisors or military managers.

Qualifications for BATUK Recruitment 2026/2027 

  • Applicants should have a minimum of grade 3 Automotive Engineering Certificate from an approved Technical Institute.
  • KSCE with Grade D or above
  • Applicants should have a good understanding of English language (written and oral).
  • Applicants should have a good understanding of the local dialect i.e Kiswahili (written and oral).
  • Applicants should have a current and valid Class C Kenyan driving licence (car license).
  • Applicants should have team work ability.
  • Applicants should be able to communicate and influence peers positively.  
  • Applicants should be good at planning and managing resources efficiently.
  • Applicants should be capable of passing the BATUK Matrix Test which is a requirement for BATUK drivers.

BATUK Recruitment Process 

In the selection process, the candidates will be tested against three major competences as well as the testing of technical (job related) knowledge. 

The 3 competences that will be tested are:

  1. Ability to work together (lead competence)
  2. Ability to communicate and influence.
  3. Ability to plan and manage resources to deliver results.
